Just in time for the start of 2012, we’re staring a hacks/hackers chapter for Rochester and the greater Western NY area. hacks/hackers is an international organization dedicated to bringing together journalists (hacks) and technologists (hackers) to collaborate on the future of news and information sharing.

This kick-off meeting will feature a series of lighting talks from local experts about hacks/hackers, “hacking” the news, and different future of journalism projects currently going on in Rochester. There will also be some breakout discussions and brainstorming for future meetings and projects.

This meeting's lighting talks will include

• What is hacks/hackers - Matt Bernius (Cornell Antho) & Nestor Ramos (D&C)
• Wielding Open Data - Remy DeCausemaker, CIVX.us
• Hacks/Hacking @ the D&C - D&C Crew
• Hacks/Hacking @ the Innovation Trail - Rachel Ward, WXXI/Innovation Trail Crew
• Bleeding Edge Tools for Hacking Journalism (on the floor at CES) - Todd Berhard

The night finishes with a mixer, immediately following the meeting, at The Lovin’ Cup.
